LED Cufflinks ! Lights?

This is a pair of LED cufflinks avaliable in 6 colours.
Yes, you are right batteries are required and might not be a liking for those who doesn't like gadget. I could imagine if you were to be in a wedding dinner you could potentially steal the limelight.

Interestingly, the idea is a marriage between a normal led and a conventional cufflinks. The result is quite innovative. Perhaps you have a better idea to combine two or more daily item you see and come up with a better products?

Some ideas that come to my mind now are:
Cufflinks +
1. Chinese chess
2. Measuring Tape
3. Magnifying Glass
4. Portable harddisk? (Maybe one of these day)

By the way, these $200 cufflinks come with two spare batteries. I guess most people would find it too pricy to part this amount of money?!

Where does the word 'cuff-links' come from ?
hi everyone,

I have just read a book title "Cuff Links". This book is written by Susan Jonas and Marilyn Nissenson. My personal review on this book is that it covers a wide range of cuff links from 17th century till today. Different materials used and the designer who made the a pair of cuff links really determine the value of of the cuff links.

One interesting fact about cuff links is in the 19th century, men's wore shirts with starched collars, cuff and shirt front. Since they wore stiffed shirts, manufacturers cleverly thought that a sleeve fastener would be easier to push through than a conventional button. Hence, a common solution was to use a metal chain or link fastener to fasten the cuffs. Therefore, what have you -> "a cuff-link"!

Another interesting picture which I saw, was a 3-dimensional looking cuff links which is totally flat when you view it side way. It creates a 3-dimensional effect which decieve your eyes at first glance.

By the way, there is only 1 copy left in the Singapore National library. ( yes, you are right now is with me, but I am going to return in the couple of days.)

Anyone fancy Sterling Silver Wood Cufflinks ?

hi friends,

I was surfing the Internet this morning and this pair of wooden silver cufflinks caught my eyes. Wooden cufflinks are not common in our society nowsaday. But I find that a clever combination of wood and silver gives a natural touch to the wearer.

Besides, for the man who loves to dress his best, these cufflinks offer the most elegant of designs. Rectangular pieces of varnished wood are inlaid in these superb sterling silver cufflinks. They are secured with heavy bullet-back clasps.

With a wooden base silver cufflinks, you would probarly want to match it with a natural base colour cuff shirts. How about blue, sunset yellow and gray? I am sure you would agree these colours does goes well!

Special Edition - Vintage Timepiece Cufflinks

Hi everyone,

I saw this on productdose.com
and gotten permission to publish it here specially for you! Hope you like it!

We imagine the genesis of the product had something to do with a consideration of the countless watch mechanisms out there clogging the shelves of thift stores. These Vintage Watch Cufflinks attempt to rectify the problem with the guts of two watches at a time. Each piece measures about .75” in diameter and is set on sterling silver cufflinks with hinged backs. Coming from vintage timepieces as they are, each set is also entirely unique, and pieces within sets are often slightly different, while still giving the impression of matching pairs.

Feel free to email me your comments. Thank you!

Watch & Compass Cuff links Anyone?
Have you seen these watch and compass cufflinks before?

Few of my friends told me that watch and compass cufflinks are more practical in our daily life. So I searched the Internet and found both the Watch and Compass cuff links.

What do you think?
For the watch cuff links, I personally find that the marriage of cuff links with watches is a good idea. Remember certain watches are quite bulky and once you wore a cuffed shirt you would rather not to wear your watches. Now you can have the best of both world. Also not forgetting, cuff links watches have gained its popularity in the es few years. Really? Need proof? Just go to any popular stores online. Most of the store cuff links watches are sold out!

As for compass cuff links, I think the main uses is to tell you directions. However, it does send a hidden message to people that you are a person who have direction, goals and desire. And someone who is successful. So I would grab one pair quickly. What about you? (Again, those nice limited pairs are sold out, sorry pal!)

Feng Shui Cuff Links To Change Your Luck?
dear friends,

Been a person who is interested in both Feng Shui and Cuff links have given me the idea to marry the 2 interests together. I am think of coming up with a series of personalised feng shui cuff links for you. What do you think?

Well, I do see feng shui gaining its popularity in Singapore and in Worldwide premise. Hmm, how about this ? Wearing Feng Shui Cuff links to your daily work to added extra meaning to just a normal pair of cuff links. Meaning only you know. Be it love luck, promotion luck, relationship luck you can alternate on days which suits you.

In Chinese feng shui, there ARE 5 elements which government the balance of the universe. They are: Water, Earth, Wood, Fire and Metal. The 5 element played an integral part together with Chinese characters or symbols.

My findings on Feng Shui Cuff Links on the Internet amazed me as there are just a handful of sellers who really go into making them. Most design are not really up to the standard which is of my liking.

But nevertheless, this particular Feng Shui Cuff links piece strike me.

A pair of longevity cuff links to symbolise long life and good health.Materials are sterling silver & red enamel. What a wonderful combination! Don't you think so?

Feng Shui Cuff Links can be made in combination with different gems stone and most lasting metal would be Stainless steel. In terms of maintainence, I am sure you know Silver do oxides and much care need to be taken.

Well, what do you think of my idea? Do use the comment below.

Interview With Clothing Expert - Andy Gilchrist
Conversation between Adwin Ang & Andy Gilchrist
Good day everyone and Welcome to our Interview with Andy Gilchrist!

As Featured On Ezine Articles

Adwin:
Hi Andy, first of all I would like to thank you for taking some time off from your busy schedule for this online interview. I have read the materials from your CD; you bet they are highly informative products. Especially you use charts and picture to illustrate. Also it is a very good and fast reference guide.
My first question is Andy, what have made you decide to come up with a website's that focus on men's fashion?

Andy:
It was an extension of my natural and long time interest in men's clothing. I started out at the monitor of a men's fashion Forum that was connected to Men's Health magazine and liked the idea. I then decided to write a book on men's clothes, (The Encyclopaedia of Men's Clothes) which took me two years, and the website was a vehicle to sell the book.

Adwin:
I have read and saw the huge number of topics which you covered on menswear both on your website and CD Rom e-Book "The Encyclopaedia of Men's Clothes", the information really amaze me on what I have missed out all these years.
Where or how did you develop your fashion sense? Any special training or courses one need to take?

Andy:
Some of it came from my father, who living in the middle of Kansas (USA) and doing oil exploration work. But he was always interested in men's fashion and the quality of the various brands of shoes, suits, shirts, etc.
And honestly I think it somewhat out of insecurity!! Not being born the best looking guy in the world (don't argue!) I realized that image and looks was important and that I needed to make myself look as good in public as possible.

Adwin:
It occurred to me men in my country aren't really dress to impress or know their dressing sense but dress according to what they think is suitable for the occasion.
For example: Some men would wear a polo-shirt or jeans for Wedding dinner. They find it more comfortable which is obviously

Where can we obtain the information on latest trends in men's fashion? Any websites which are your favourites?

Andy:
Unlike women's clothing, most men's clothing (even for the most formal occasions) are intricately comfortable. Women are always searching for comfortable shoes, while men would not stand (pardon the pun) for shoes that didn't fit well and feel good.
There is also a world wide cultural (or sexual) mind set that men are not suppose to dress well. They are "supposed" to be unkempt, rugged individuals. But if you study every male animal species you note that the male is the more colourful!

It's good to keep up on the current trends, but not necessarily to go crazy for each fad that comes along. The value of men's clothing is that they change fashion rarely since the styles have been evolving down through a 100 years to something that fits men's body types, activities and makes most men look great. Look at formalwear - every man looks exceptionally handsome in the classic (no frills, no updates, no changes) basic tuxedo.
The "acceptable" colors for business (Navy or grey suit, white or blue shirt, etc.) compliment most gentlemen's skin, hair and eye colors.

Adwin:
You mention about the "Rule of Seven" a few times in your Men's clothes Encyclopedia. What exactly must we watch out on the '7 rules'?

Andy:
Just to restate that there is a "Rule of Seven" in women's fashion that applies to men as well. The "rule" states that there should be no more than seven points of interest on your body at any one time!

The theory is that too much visual stimulation detracts from the total look.
Points of interest could be a watch, pocket square, bright tie, blazer buttons, braces, belt buckle, cuff links, fashion glasses, facial hair, vest, anything that could draw attention to that item.

So if you're wearing an exceptional pair of cufflinks you don't want to overpower them by adding too many other visual excitement.
When others are visually overloaded they tend to repel you. The mistake when you have too many points of interest is that the look is loud, busy and discordant (not harmonic). Too many patterns make you look like a clown.

Adwin:
The section which I find it most interesting is on casual wear.” DON’T BE A CASUAL CASUALTY!" which you mention alot of people have misunderstood the meaning of casual dressing. I do agree and myself have always misunderstood it at the long.
What are the different types of casual wear and how should we wear to address the word "Casual wear" on our invitation card?

Andy:
Part of the problem is that the person sending out the invitation has no idea what the classifications of dress are and thus confuses the guests. There are 5 classifications of dressy and 5 classifications of casual and they all depend on the occasion. It's easy to get them all mixed up.

Adwin:
Ehm...Andy, as you know I am running a blog site on cuff links. My next question is in general how should we match our cuff links to the type of cuff shirts we wear, in terms of shirts and cuffs material?

Andy:
You can coordinate cuff links by colour with the rest of your ensemble for that harmonic impression.
You may want to coordinate the metal colour with your watch and ring, so that everything, for example, is gold, but that’s not really necessary. Many watches contain both silver and gold and colour mixing is not scorned.
Traditionally gold was appropriate for day, and silver for evening, but with the advent of a more casual approach both are interchangeable. Silver goes with blue, black or grey, and gold is best with earth tones.

Adwin:
About cuff links care, how should we store them to prevent scratches and should we clean them often for cuff links made of stainless steel?

Andy:
Store your cuff links in a felt lined jewellery case or use any other method that keeps the links from coming in contact with each other to prevent scratching.
If you don’t have a jewellery case just keep them in the felt lined box they were packed in when you purchased them. Of if they didn’t come in a box (where did you say you got these cuff links?) try storing them in a soft cloth in a drawer.

Adwin:
As you know, there are many type of cuff links in the market. For a person who intend to buy his first pair of cuff links what should he look out for? Is there such a thing as the main categories of cuff types?

Andy:
STYLES of CUFF LINKS:(from most elegant to least dressy)

Double-faced are links with two identical faces attached with a metal link. You push one face through the “button” holes of the cuff. These are the dressiest.Chain links -- A chain attaches the double-faced links.
Snap on are made up of two separate pieces that snap together.

Push-through -- This style has a bulbous or globular end opposite the showy side, which is pushed through the cuff holes. Also see Silk Knots below.

Hinged back -- This type has a bar, which can be aligned perpendicular to the link then opened parallel, after it’s pushed though the cuff, to secure the link in place.

Stirrup are cufflinks that wrap around the shirt cuff. Some consider these garish.

Silk knots have two knots linked together with and made of silk; one of the knots is pushed through the cuff hole to hold the cuff together. Silk knots are the least dressy style.

Adwin:
I have seen a few men's cosmetics store in Singapore but might be catering to a small group of people. But seems to me men nowadays are more concern of the way they dress themselves and they are more willing to spend on accessories.
Do you think men's fashion wear will continue to be more popular for the next 5 years or so?

Andy:
Absolutely. Men are realizing the importance to their daily lives of looking good. A good impression helps with business, love life, family and all relationships (getting through airport security!!) There will be a boom in men's cosmetics, quality and classic clothing (some with new high tech fabrics) and a greater willingness to spend money on items that make us look good.

Adwin :
Andy, having been in the men's fashion industry for many years, what are the common problems that are face by men nowadays in term of their dressing?

Andy:
The casual dressing era was welcomed by many men but then it became apparent that putting all those elements together properly wasn't so easy. Certainly not as easy as putting a suit (one element) together with a shirt, tie, and shoe and a belt that matched. It's more difficult to dress in casual mode and look good.

Adwin:
Coming back to the topic of cuff links, do you have any resources to recommend where readers here can draw information from?

Andy:
There must be a good history or a book on cuff links out there. If not, Adwin, let's write one!

Adwin:
From our last email exchanged, you are launching your a set of cuff links, do you intend to go into customisation cuff links for the Online community? How can they reach you?

Andy:
Smart Turnout, in the UK, in the UK, One of the sponsor's on Ask Andy About clothes.com agreed to design a pair of chain style (double faced) cuff links with the Ask Andy hanger on one side and some nice blue tone stripes on the other. (so you could wear the ask Andy side out for Ask Andy get-together events and the other side out for day to day wear. I should have some news (photos, prices) very soon.

Adwin:Once again, thank you, Andy!, for sharing with us your knowledge on clothing’s and await to see more of your exciting tips and cuffs launches.
Take care and have a nice day!

Andy: Thank you Adwin! Really good thoughtful questions. Good luck on the great website you've started on cufflinks. I really like the layout and the information there is excellent.

Tips on Cuffs #1: Customise Your Shirts Into Cuff Links Shirt
dear friends,

let me share with you a little trick you can do it if you don't have a cuff link shirt. well, actually a tip from a friend which helps me save some dollars on cuff links shirt.

I am sure everyone knows that the price of a normal cuff link shirt would be around 80 to 100 dollars. You might be hestitant to purchase your first pair of cuff link due to the shirt price is much more expensive then the cuff link shirt.

Well then you should more read this tips that I am about to share with you. Do you have many long sleeves shirts but none of them are cuff links designed ones?

How about this -> I can turn your normal long sleeves shirts into cuff links shirt in a few steps plus you get to wear your long sleeves shirts and cuff links enable shirt as and when you like it.

Sound too good to be true?

Then Try this:
Step 1: Remove the buttons on both sleeves of your business shirt. (yes, both buttons)
Step 2: Align the sleeve button hole and mark at the place where the button use to be.
Step 3: Repeat for both side.
Step 4: Cut a hole size of the button hole and sew it nicely or you can get a tailor to do it for you.
Step 5: Sew one button next to the remake button hole on both sides.

Now, you have a cuff shirt and a conventional shirt which you can interchange!
To cut my story short in case you don't understand, I have included a picture to illustrate.

Hope this can helps you save some money on cuff shirts and get you interested in cuff links!
Remember we dress to impress others after all.

Watch out for my Tips #2 coming soon!

Review on "The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes"
Hi everyone,

I have gotten andy's CD rom last weekend. That's fast! Thanks to Andy.
Well, I have been going through the materials and found tons of knowledge from this "Clothing Encyclopedia".

As you know, my focus for this blog is mainly on Cuffs. But nevertheless, I must share with you a summary of what tips and useful information on what I have learnt from Andy's encyclopedia. I can tell you if you really want to feel good, do yourself a favour -> Dress good!

Just to pick a few topics for you.

DRESS SHIRTS

The word “shirt” comes from Old English “scyrte” which developed into the Middle English word “shirte” meaning “a short garment”.
The best dress shirts are cut full in the body. A full cut allows more freedom of movement.

This doesn't mean that if you have wide shoulders and a very narrow waist you shouldn't find a dress shirt style that fits your body. You can also have a shirt easily tailored to take in an excess material. Just don't opt for the skin tight look!

A quality dress shirt is long. It extends at least nine inches below your trouser top.

Because of the length, the shirt will have at least seven buttons on the front placket.

Quality shirt makers do not skimp on buttons.

Original bespoke (custom made) dress shirts had NO breast pocket. Pockets on shirts begin

showing up as the waistcoat (vest) went out of style. But a gentleman would not use it, even
if one comes with the shirt. Brooks Brothers didn’t add a pocket to their button-down shirt until 1965! Your pen (and glasses, tickets, calculator, etc.) belong in an inside suit jacket pocket! And now that you know, you won’t need that pocket protector anymore. If a shirt has two pockets, it is NOT a dress shirt!

Andy’s tailor tip: If you find a shirt you love, but it has the double buttons (“size adjustment”) on the shirt cuff see which button works best, and cut the other one off! And NEVER, NEVER wear a short-sleeved shirt with a tie!!!!

EYE WEAR

General tips
Other people need to see your eyes for best communication.
Frame should cover your eyebrow.
Eye should be in the center of the frame.
Try for balance when choosing the style of frames to fit your face shape.
Frame color should harmonize with your eye, hair and skin tones or you can go with gold, copper or bronze metals for warm tone skin colors, and silver for cool skin colors.
Think of glasses as fashion items. Try adding to your collection and wearing different glasses for different events.

Single powered lens corrects only one vision deficiency like nearsightedness (you can see near but not far), farsightedness (you can see far but not near) and astigmatism. They can be for full-time wear or part-time use (like reading glasses). People with multiple vision deficiencies require multifocal lenses.

Special note: Computer glasses – If you are on a computer more than four hours per day, you may want to consider a separate pair of eyewear, since the focal distance for looking at the screen of a computer is different than farsighted or nearsighted vision.

BELTS

Not only do belts hold up your pants but they provide an element to make a fashion statement.

Belts do get noticed! The eye is automatically drawn to it since belts are at the center of your body, and usually darker than the rest of your clothes.

The word belt is from the Middle English, and Old English; akin to Old High German balz; both from Latin balteus.

1. The edge of the belt buckle, the edge of your shirt and the edge of you pants fly should all line up vertically. All these edges should face to your right.

2. Never wear a belt and braces (suspenders) at the same time, unless you’re playing a bumpkin in a film role, or you want to look insecure.

3. Two circumstances require braces instead of a belt.Under a vest a belt sometimes protrudes ruining the smooth line of a vest, and with formal wear braces are traditional.

WALLETS

Wallets or billfolds are an accessory used to carry money, credit cards and a few photographs.

You need a very thin, top grain leather or exotic skin wallet.

Ergonomic fashion fundamental – Two smaller wallets carried one each in the front pockets instead of the rear. It will save back strain and pain. When you sit on a large billfold pressure is placed on your sciatic nerves and muscles. Many back problems have been related to this practice.

There is another advantage to carrying two small billfolds in your front pockets. The first wallet keeps your credit cards, important stuff and some cash. The other has some cash you don’t mind “donating” New York Style to muggers.

CUFF LINKS

Cuff links are usually a small ornamental device, generally a pair of linked buttons or one button that fastens with a bar or shank, inserted through buttonholes to keep the cuff of a shirt or blouse closed. Cuff buttons took the place of cuff strings in the 17th century, and the word link appeared as early as 1788.

Cuff Links are largely a matter of personal taste and expression. The double-faced cuff links are the dressiest since they look equally well from both sides of the cuff.

STYLES of CUFF LINKS:
(from most elegant to least dressy)

Double-faced are links with two identical faces attached with a metal link. You push one face through the “button” holes of the cuff.
These are the dressiest.

Snap on are made up of two separate pieces that snap together.

Push-through -- This style has a bulbous or globular end opposite the showy side, which is

pushed through the cuff holes.
Also see Silk Knots below.

Hinged back -- This type has a bar, which can be aligned perpendicular to the link then

opened parallel, after it’s pushed though the cuff, to secure the link in place.

Stirrup are cufflinks that wrap around the shirt cuff. Some consider these garish.

Silk knots have two knots linked together with and made of silk; one of the knots is pushed

through the cuff hole to hold the cuff together.
Silk knots are the least dressy style.

CARE:
Store your cuff links in a felt lined jewelry case or use any other method that keeps the links from coming in contact with each other to prevent scratching.

If you don’t have a jewelry case just keep them in the felt lined box they were packed in when you purchased them. Of if they didn’t come in a box (where did you say you got these cuff links?) try storing them in a soft cloth in a drawer.

Of course there are many other topics which are covered in this encylopedia CD like: What styles of shoes you should wear, watches guide, how to tie a bowtie, socks guide, Tips, secrets, and common sense to teach you how to put together a clothing ensemble that will make you look great, sport jackets, what is the rule of seven, fabic production, clothing care, trousers guide, even swimming trunk and underwear.

In addition, each chapter have a history section. Where does all these dressing items originated from? Aren't you interested to know? Nowsaday people have treat their clothing accessories as a necessity, no longer knows or care for the reason behind why they wear, how they wear it, what should they wear for different occasion.

I have to agree with Andy that "What you wear makes a difference in how you influence the world. Why not take advantage of this. Since 90% of us is covered with clothing, the clothing you choose makes a significant impact and one area where we can effect the greatest impression."
